Big Kahuna Tiki Huts recently completed a tiki bar and tiki hut for one of our customers in Orlando, Florida.
The tiki hut is 20x10 with fresh cut palm fronds making up the tiki roof. The L-shaped tiki bar is a total of 12 feet which includes a prep area.
Many Floridians are choosing to install their own tiki bars in their backyards. Not only are they esthetically pleasing, but they keep with the tropical theme in Florida backyards.
The first" commercial" tiki bar was named Don the Beachcomber. It was created by Ernest Gantt (a/k/a Donn Beach) and opened in a 13x30 foot shop in 1933 located on Hollywood Blvd. in Los Angeles. The bar seated two dozen customers, served exotic rum drinks and displayed artifacts from many tropical (South Pacific) locales. The first popular rum drink served at the bar was the Sumatra Kula, which cost a quarter. The bar eventually expanded to 16 locations.
When Ernest Gantt died in 1989 (he had legally changed his name to Donn Beach), the New York Times wrote a brief obituary painting him as a sort of Thomas Edison of the thatched-roof bar.
Throughout the years, Donn Beach told his customers, "If you can't get to paradise, I'll bring it to you."
